Key West puts you within walking distance of Duval Street, sunset sailing, and most of the nightlife. Rates start higher and the crowds run louder. For snorkeling at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the Upper Keys are the better base. Key Largo and Islamorada properties sit on the water with lower rates and fewer crowds. Coconut Cove Resort and Marina in Islamorada starts at $129 and feels like a different trip from the Key West strip. Key West is the walkable, lively choice; the Upper Keys trade that energy for open water and calm.

Most of the 12 properties here have in-room jetted or soaking tubs rather than shared outdoor hot tubs, but the styles vary. H2O Suites Hotel has freestanding soaking tubs in the suite: they are beautiful but do not jet. Whirlpool tubs with jets appear at properties like Ocean Key Resort and Spa. If pressurized jets matter to you, check the tub type on each card before booking. A soaking tub and a whirlpool are two different experiences, even when both get labeled jacuzzi.

In Key West, Latitudes on Sunset Key is worth the short ferry ride for a waterfront dinner after a long soak. The restaurant sits on its own island and the sunset from the deck ranks among the best in the Keys. In Islamorada, Robbie's Marina is where you feed tarpon off the dock and grab fish tacos. Neither spot is a tourist trap. Budget a full evening for Latitudes and a casual afternoon for Robbie's.

Late August through October is peak hurricane season, and several properties sit at sea level on narrow islands with limited evacuation routes. Insurance complications and last-minute cancellations are common. Fantasy Fest in late October and the weeks around Christmas through New Year push Key West rates to their annual highs and pack Duval Street. Mid-January through April is the best window. Weather is dry, water temperatures are comfortable, and rates at properties like Almond Tree Inn land between peak and off-season prices.

Key West Old Town properties sit close to bar traffic that runs late, especially on weekends. Almond Tree Inn is adults-only and one block off Duval, which helps. The Upper Keys offer real quiet: Islamorada and Key Largo properties face open water with no bar strip nearby. The tradeoff is fewer restaurants within walking distance and needing a car for everything. You cannot have both Key West walkability and Upper Keys silence, so decide which one you will resent losing more.
